"Remote Learning" 40" x 32" Acrylic Painting on Wood Panel
In this work, I stand peacefully--trying to maintain stability in a boat while balancing professionalism and comfort in my attire. As an educator I have spent countless hours in 2020 teaching remotely. Daily I am left questioning the impact of each lesson, its effectiveness, and the engagement level on the other side of the screen when oftentimes I am met with silence.
The sailboats in the painting represent my interaction with students and teaching them from afar; our collective interactions and bursts of isolated creativity. Teaching remotely is much less concrete than a traditional classroom setting as the lessons seem to wisp out into the abyss, like a sail attempting to gain traction in the wind.
This work is the second piece in a series called “I wanna add something to this world.”
